April 30 marked 100 days since Donald Trump returned to the White House – and a bit more than 100 days since Michael Baumgartner was sworn in. And for Eastern Washington, it’s been a 100 days of avoidable chaos imposed by the Republican National Party.
Unelected billionaire crony Elon Musk has been wielding DOGE like a chain saw, gutting the programs and systems that we rely on. Ending food support for low-income families to buy from local grocers and farmers’ markets; dissolving public sector unions; slowing Social Security; ending heating fuel support for low-income households; slashing Veterans Affairs; stopping agricultural research; strangling infrastructure investment to connect rural folks to the broader economy – you name it, they’ve cut it.
But wait, one thing they haven’t cut? Prices. The utterly irrational tariffs, taxes on people who buy things like fertilizer and lumber from Canada, car parts from Mexico, and aluminum, steel, and coffee from practically anywhere. Our trading partners are pushing back, and that hurts our businesses: home builders, retailers, farmers, wine makers, breweries and other small business owners who’d FINALLY recovered from the pandemic.
And Michael Baumgartner? He is actively conspiring with national MAGA leadership against the interests of small businesses and working folks in Eastern Washington, especially in rural communities. He voted to surrender Congressional power to an out-of-control executive, and is using his seat on the Judiciary Committee to try to prevent judges from exercising THEIR responsibilities under the Constitution. He says in his newsletters that we’re his “bosses” – but his votes tell us otherwise.
We deserve a representative who listens, fights for working families, seniors, and veterans, and upholds the values that make Eastern Washington strong.
